The purpose of the Debian Project is to provide a
free operating
system. Debian uses the
Linux kernel,
initiated by Linus Torvalds
and many softwares from the
GNU Project so the main distribution
is referenced as Debian GNU/Linux.
You will find more information about the Debian Project on the
Debian website.
I am not (yet) a Debian developer. However I used to make some deb packages from softwares I use. You can have access to this packaged softwares from my own apt repository.
You can also find a script which automate
the creation of Debian packages from custom kernels.
